Portrait Painting Masterclass with Alex Tzavaras

  • Sunday the 26th August – 10.30am approx three hours
  • 4A Champion Hill SE5 8AH
  • Refreshments
  • Suggested donation £5

Alex has an uncanny ability to catch the likeness of his sitter, one of the reasons he is a highly sought after portrait artist. Underpinning his natural talent is a strong adherence to method, one which he shares with his students on his painting courses. On Sunday the 26th August Alex will be giving a demonstration of his way of painting at our studio at 4A Champion Hill. It will be an excellent insight into how he works and essential if you are thinking of signing up for one of his courses. You can see his work here or follow him on instagram here

This is a free event but you may want to make a donation of £5 towards the cost of the facilities – we won’t put any pressure on you!

We will provide refreshments at our usual modest prices.

If you want to come could you fill out this form please:

Secret Charter – postcard painting exhibition

The Charter School (North Dulwich), a fantastic, inclusive, state secondary school in Dulwich, South London, under the current government funding deal, faces losing half a million pounds over the next few years.

Secret Charter has been conceived, with the approval of The Friends of The Charter School, to highlight this issue and with the aim of raising at least £15,000 to support specific Arts projects at the school and allow students to continue to experience what is currently being offered by the wonderful Arts departments at the Charter. A refurbishment of their photographic dark room, is for example, on their wish list.

The Secret Charter postcard sale will be held at the end of October. We need a minimum of 400 postcards to meet the fund-raising goal. We’re recruiting artists, designers, illustrators and high profile personalities to support the event and make it as successful as possible.

We want the event to be accessible, therefore, each card will be sold for an affordable price and ‘the secret’ will be that the cards will be anonymous. While buyers will have seen and chosen a postcard, they won’t know whose work they’ve bought until after they have purchased the postcard. It will be a big event held in a beautiful venue in Dulwich.

We include a card for you to get creative on. A stamped addressed envelope is enclosed. On the back of the card we ask you to sign and print your name and use a pencilled arrow to indicate which way up the card should be viewed. Please return your card to us by 30th June.

Should you wish to do more than one card please use the card as a template to cut (A6 size 148mm x 105mm). If you wish to use your own card please return the blank water colour card for us to reuse.

We would like to include a very short ‘bio’ of our artists in our information to give to your buyer (after they have purchased your card). Please do send a couple of lines abour you and/or your work and inspiration (eg. “Laura Stephens, local Dulwich artist, architect, or, “Laura Stephens, Royal Academy artist and textile designer”).

Finally, we would like to publicise the event and support all of our participating artists by promoting you and your work through social media, marketing, press releases and advertising. We would like to include an image of your work (but not your postcard!) and mention your name and the bio information you supply in our promotion of the event and ask that you can confirm that you are happy for us to do so on the permission slip below and email us an image of your work that you would be happy for us to include.

Your donation will make a direct contribution to children’s educational experiences as we continue to try and ensure their access to a full creative education. We will promote all the artists we use through our social media and marketing.

If you have any questions at all please contact us at secretcharternorth@gmail.com or call 07970072525. Please follow us on Instagram our account @secretcharter and facebook @secretcharter page.

I give permission for ‘Secret Charter’ to include my name, biography info below and the image (emailed) for promotion of the Secret Charter postcard sale fundraising event.

My mini ‘biography’ is: ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ and I have signed and printed my name on the back of my postcard.

Easter Egg Hunt in Dulwich Village – Artists, paint an egg?

CALL FOR ARTISTS

From March 15 th to April 2 nd 2018 a very special Easter Egg Hunt will be taking place in Dulwich Village. The unique, egg-shaped creations of 20 local artists will be displayed in the windows of the shops and businesses for locals and visitors to spot and enjoy. Each egg will be decorated to represent an aspect of Dulwich’s rich and fascinating past and present.

We need YOU to volunteer your creative talents to decorate one such egg.

The Ernest Shackleton Egg, the Pissarro Egg or even the Blitz Egg: we have a whole list of fascinating themes to suggest, or perhaps you have your own idea? We will be providing the ostrich-sized blank eggs.
Each egg will be listed with your profile, on our dedicated Egg Hunting Map which will be circulated in the Village and beyond. It’s a wonderful opportunity to generate interest in your upcoming Artists’ Open House and we are hoping for good media coverage of this early spring event.

Furthermore, in May, all the eggs will be displayed together during the Dulwich Festival period in the window of the Art Stationers (31 Dulwich Village) with your name and Open House venue number
for extra “egg-sposure” (sorry!). When it is all over your egg will be returned to you to keep.

All you need to do now is register your interest by emailing Mary Green on greensvillagetoyshop@gmail.com by February 21 st . Artists will be notified to start work on February 28 th and all eggs must be completed by March 14 th .

Best Wishes

It’s the end of our year so we’ll be celebrating in our studio after the Saturday morning session. You’re invited.

Wednesday Morning – Drop-in Life Drawing and Painting
Wednesday Afternoon – Drop-in Portraiture
Thursday Evening – Tutored Introduction to Life Drawing
Friday – Drop-in Life Drawing and Painting
Saturday – Drop-in Life Drawing and Painting

This is the last week of the year for the group and time for a well earned rest. Our goal for 2017 was to transition to an independent art school and to fill the studio with artists every day of the week, something we’ve achieved with the help of our talented tutors and tireless studio manager. Next year we will be refining our offering to support artists as they grow and establish themselves. We firmly believe that each artist has a unique voice and that discovering it is a crucial part of learning to paint. Our tutors all have their own distinctive ways of making images, working with them exposes us to the fundamental principles they all work with. These fundamentals are fertile soil and if we allow our own roots to be bedded in them our growth is more likely to be vigorous and sturdy and importantly the fruit will be a reflection of who we are, no one else.

Christmas Party Saturday 16th December 2.00pm – 6.00pm. Do come along to this after the Saturday morning session. You don’t have to draw with us first, just turn up at 2.00pm. We have wine and beer and festive food for meat-eaters and vegetarians alike. We’re a friendly lot and but we usually converse with a paint brush in hand, how about swapping the brush for a glass and sharing some seasonal cheer?

Christmas Break after Saturday Session on the 16th December until the first drop-in session on Friday the 5th January

Wednesday Drop-in long pose untutored
10.00am-1.00pm

Odilia stands for the last week of her pose with us. Alex is working on a portrait of her, the shaved head makes her look child like and androgynous. She is standing with an arm resting on our black column. We don’t have too many standing poses, some say we’re we’re too soft on our models!

Cost £15 no need to book, just turn up.

Wednesday Afternoon Drop-in Portraiture
2.00pm -5.00pm

A new model this week called Nicki. Her cv reveals she is an actor, singer, dancer and burlesque performer so sitting still for us will be a bit of a breeze for her. As this is the last week of the year we will continue the portrait after Christmas starting on the 10th January 2018 for two further sittings.

This is a drop-in group for those wanting to work on their portraiture. You can read more here

Cost £20 Tea and cake £1

Thursday Introduction to Life Drawing
7.30-9.30pm

The last week of our 12 week Introduction to Life Drawing. You may now feel that you know everything there is to know on the subject or you may, like the rest of us, realise the enormity of the task ahead of you. The truth is that artists never stop learning, which is why our daytime drop-in groups are full of well practiced artists who use life drawing as a way of keeping their eye in and their on-going visual enquiry alive. We will be running the same course again next  term, you’d be welcome to come back if you enjoy the tuition. Alternatively we run a drop-in at Love Walk down in Camberwell on Thursday evenings where you can just get on with it. If you want a longer time on a pose we run long pose drop-in sessions on Wednesday morning, Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings where we keep the same pose for three weeks.

Tonight’s model is Maria

Friday Drop-in Long pose untutored
1.00-4.00pm

Sara – is in a demure seated pose for us, head looking slightly down. We’ve warmed the lights up a bit (just because we can now!) to enhance her golden skin tones. This is the second week of a three week pose which we will finish on Friday the 5th January 2018

Cost £15 no need to book, just turn up.

Saturday Drop-in Long Pose Untutored Life Drawing and Painting
10.00am-1.00pm

Sophie is to be the model for our last session of the year. She practices yoga which qualifies her as a life model, inner stillness leads to outward immobility and good muscle memory helps the return to pose. We will continue the pose for two weeks after the Christmas break starting on the 6th January.

Cost £15 no need to book, just turn up.

Lucy Sullivan, who many of you will know, suffers from Dysthymia; a persistent depressive disorder. She’s also a fine illustrator who you can follow on instagram who draws with us on her better days. Her latest graphic novel, Barking, is being published by Unbound using a crowd funding mechanism. Her work has an extraordinary power and fearlessness, it’s not for the faint hearted but golly it images the dark heart of depression. Given the current public interest in mental health issues this is a very timely book and highly collectible. If you support her early on you can get a signed first edition with your name credited in the back. Can’t promise it will cheer her up but it’s worth a shot, no? Make your pledge here

You know how it is that at this time of year we start to muse upon what the next year may bring? At the Dulwich Art Group we’re also looking forward to how we can support artists on their journey to being fantastic in 2018. Our drop-in groups continue to be a great resource being a space where artists can practice together and learn through shared exchange. Our tutored groups offer more targeted learning where over the period of a term or two one can move from uncertain marks to a sense of purpose and a clear way forward. Art’s a funny thing. We have to do all the work ourselves and yet we benefit so much from the company of others on the same path. With a tutor you have someone who takes a personal interest in your progress. We still have to do all the work but with the steadying hand of a professional progress can be more certain.

I have personally worked with Clare, David and Alex (who run our painting courses) and I have learnt much from each of them (not least that we are very lucky to have them giving their time to us). What one discovers is that despite the differences in execution they are all following the same deep fundamentals. Looking to find the essentials and only describing what matters to them. When we work with them, yes we’ll learn the practicalities of handling paint and how to manage proportion but the really powerful stuff is discovering what is important to us and focusing our art upon that.

So if you want your painting to pick up pace next year have a think about committing to some solid tuition. Each of our tutors has their own voice but they will all help you to discover and develop yours.

Miguel Sopena has a solo exhibition ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ at Matthews Yard Croydon. These are images that are a response to memories and impressions of specific places, namely Valencia and Croydon, where Miguel has lived. The execution is playful and much about the medium with thick textures and strong colours. Facebook event and more info here

Martin Ireland is exhibiting with others at the Focus LDN Winter exhibition showcasing ‘the best contemporary artists London has to offer’ at the Menier Gallery in Southwark St. There is a private view on the 12th December book tickets here

Odilia turns out to be Spanish, a diminutive person who arrived on a child’s bike! She is lovely to paint, here’s a picture of her painting herself followed by Alex Tzavaras’ study from last week of the standing pose. If you’d like to see her paintings have a look at her website

Cost £15 no need to book, just turn up.

Wednesday Afternoon Drop-in Portraiture
2.00pm -5.00pm

Third and last chance to capture Becky’s likeness. She has bleached white hair and an interesting face which, like so many good subjects, can be read in multiple ways. Seeing several artists handle her reveals that we all see something different. Here is Ben Hope’s individual view.

This is a drop-in group for those wanting to work on their portraiture. You can read more here

Cost £20 Tea and cake £1

Thursday Introduction to Life Drawing
7.30-9.30pm

The eleventh and penultimate week of our Introduction to Life Drawing. Our hope is that out of the drawing methods we have explored you will have found a way to describe the human figure in a way that feels right to you. We also hope that you have discovered that the more drawing you do the better you become at it. Ultimately it should be like handwriting, not something you really think about, just a visual language which describes what you see. Like handwriting it will be personal to you and recognisable by anyone that knows you. We’ll work more on fluency this evening looking particularly at ways of making the heads, hands and feet part of the whole drawing. Our model is Angela:

Thursday Evening – Drop-in Untutored Life Drawing
7.30-9.30pm

Someone pointed out that the postcode for this venue is incorrect. I’ve checked and the actual post code is SE5 8ST. So if you’ve had problems in finding us I do apologise. There are clear instructions at the bottom of this page and putting the postcode SE5 8ST into google maps will now get you there.

Our model tonight, Freyia, is full of soft curves which makes her great fun to draw. Anatomy becomes less important and gesture, movement and attitude come to the fore. This will be that last session at the United Reformed Church for this year – we’ll be back again next year.

No need to book, no formal teaching, just turn up and start drawing. We have easels, boards, charcoal, pencils and paper and a lovely warm well lit space. You can read more about the group here.

Cost £10
Tea and Biscuits £1
Please note that this group is not in our regular studios but down the hill in Camberwell.

Dates for the New Year

We appear to be hurtling like a Croydon tram towards the end of the year and the tinsel crash of Christmas. Which means there are various administrative tasks to be covered not least of which are the dates for the New Year:

  • We’ve published the dates of our courses on the website. This means that if you are continuing with any of our courses you can put the dates in your diary and let us know of your intentions. If you’re wanting to start a new course in the new year then now is a good time to fill in the forms on the website and let us know.
  • The Christmas break begins at exactly the same moment that the term ends after the Saturday session on the 16th December. The sharp transition will be softened like a lost edge on a Richard Schmid by our Christmas Party – do come.
  • The first drop-in session of the New Year will be on Friday 5th January and then weekly drop-ins will resume as usual until the Easter break

A taster day with Clare Haward

On the 11th December Clare is running a special taster day in the studio. For those already attending her courses it will be business as usual but if you’re thinking of joining up this will be an excellent way of finding out if you could work with Clare. She will combine discussion, demonstration and practical work to give you a feel for the way she looks at painting. The day runs from 10.00am – 4.00pm and from 7.00-9.30pm in the evening. You can come for the day for £65 or the morning or evening for £35. Drop us an email to register your interest.

Bukie Kawano, one of our more regular artists, has this work in the ROI (Royal Institute of Oil Painters) show. If you’d like to go to the private view on the 28th November here’s a link to the invite

Alex Tazvaras has added another video continuing his insights into portraiture here. These short videos are freighted with valuable ideas, worth subscribing to his channel.

Christmas Party Saturday 16th December 2.00pm – 6.00pm – we’ll be charging a nominal £5 to defray the cost of the vast quantity of wine and food we intend to consume. If you let Alison know you’re coming that would help us get in the appropriate amount of provisions.

Exhibition at the Copper Beech Cafe – for all November – you can see about 30 works by artists from the group at this stylish cafe next to JAGS sports club website here

Thursday Introduction to Life Drawing
7.30-9.30pm

The ninth week of our Introduction to Life Drawing. We’re beginning to pull the threads together, we’ve looked at a few different ways of describing the figure, some ways of improving proportional accuracy. Ultimately it’s up to you where you place the emphasis and how you evolve your own visual language. This evening we’ll begin to look at how we describe volume.
