Introduction to Figure Painting Workshop

£75.00

Learn to paint the human figure

Sunday 28th of April 2024

10am – 3.00pm

Workshop leader: Simon Dunstan

Making the jump from drawing to painting can be a bit daunting and yet for many it is the natural progression of their interest in describing the human figure. No one is going to learn to paint competently in four hours and yet that is precisely the amount of time that we will give you to grasp the fundamentals – it’s enough to get you going.

Who is it for?

  • Not for the absolute beginner but for those who have some drawing under their belt and are not sure of the best way forward with figure and oil paint.
  • Those who would like to know more about how Simon paints.

Points to note

  • The workshop will run from 10am – 3.00pm with a break for lunch.
  • There will be a demonstration and discussion of method followed by an opportunity to paint the model yourself with instruction and support.
  • There will be a modest charge for lunch if you choose to take it with us. (Recommended)
  • There will be a nude model.
  • Think about how to get your wet painting home.

Equipment

You will need to have basic kit, bristle brushes in various sizes, paints, either a modern split primary palette or a Zorn palette, optionally a medium, rags, dippers, palette and so on.

A standard modern split primary palette would be:

  • Titanium White
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Prussian or Pthalocyanin Blue (green shade)
  • Cadmium red, Alizarin Crimson (or Quinacridone Rose)
  • Cadmium Yellow and Cadmium Yellow Pale or lemon
  • Earth colours are also invaluable: a dark earth such as Raw Umber, Paynes Grey or Ivory Black and most artists have Yellow Ochre in their box too.

Or the Zorn palette (after Swedish artist Anders Zorn)

  • Titanium White
  • Cadmium Red
  • Yellow Ochre
  • Ivory Black
