Tutor: George Butler
Join celebrated illustrator and war artist George Butler for an immersive one-day course in reportage illustration. This workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn from an artist renowned for his compelling and immediate ink and wash technique and his unerring ability to tell a visual story with charm yet great economy.
Morning Session
The day begins with a live demonstration by George, where he will showcase his signature approach to capturing scenes with pen and ink. Drawing from his extensive experience in conflict zones and areas of social significance, George will share insights into how he focuses on the core of the story he wants to tell, eliminating extraneous content to create powerful and concise imagery. He will discuss the steps he takes to prepare for a scene, from initial observation to the final, evocative rendering.
After a brief coffee break, you’ll be guided through a studio drawing project using photographic imagery as reference. George will offer personalised guidance to ensure you understand and can apply his approach to your work, emphasising speed and storytelling in illustration.
Afternoon Session
Following a shared lunch, the group will head out to the area around the studio. This hands-on session will provide the opportunity to put into practice the techniques and advice discussed in the morning, capturing the essence of the environment through quick and powerful drawings.
